TS Chess: Ruleset

General

This document contains the rules for the TS Chess tournament. The context and reasoning for tee rules are explained under each heading.

The rules are designed to make this tournament run smoothly, allow for a fun tournament, and give participants equal opportunities. If something occurs that is not reflected in the rules, an organizer will decide on a further course of action. Organizers will always have the final say.

The tournament will be run on November 16th from 19:00. Signups will close at 18:00. The tournament will consist of a round robin in the case of 8 participants or fewer. In case of more participants a lichess arena will be used instead.

Format

Time control will be rapid, with 10 minutes initial time and 0 second increment (10+0).

Duration of the tournament

In case of a round robin, the tournament will last at maximum 2 hours and 20 minutes, however participants are free to continue their next game earlier if both sides are ready.

In case of an arena format, the tournament will last for 2 hours. During this time, you can join, pause and leave the tournament whenever you please. To join, you simply press the join button and leave you to have to either press the pause button or close the tab.

After two hours since the start of the tournament, it will end regardless of how many matches you played and if you paused or joined later. This means that it is possible to join a tournament later or take a break during the tournament, but you will have less time to play games and therefore less time to score points.

If a match ends after the 2-hour mark it will no longer count towards your score, even if the game started before the tournament has ended.

How are scores calculated?

A win is worth two points, a draw is a single point, and a loss is zero points. Additionally, players can berserk, which cuts their time in half, but will grant an additional point upon winning. In case of a round robin, berserk is not enabled. In case players are tied, the head to head result will be taken first. If this is also tied, a tiebreaker match will be played.

Cheating

Cheating will not be tolerated during this tournament. If you are caught cheating, you will instantly be disqualified from the tournament.

The following are all considered cheating:

  • Using any online chess engine or analysis tool during a game.

  • Using books, databases or other sources as, for instance, opening assistance during a game.

  • Discuss moves or receive help with/from any other people during a game. This includes people from your own team or association.

  • If you decide to stream, receiving move suggestions from chat will also be considered cheating. The earlier mentioned Chrome plugin is mandatory.

  • Watching the stream during your games will be considered cheating as the commentators might discuss your game. Feel free to watch the stream when you are not playing or taking a break.

Lichess’s TOS also apply during this tournament.

Anti-cheat committee

An anti-cheat committee will be formed consisting of members of several associations and skilled chess players. If it is deemed necessary, more members may be added to this committee during or after the event.

If you suspect anyone of cheating, please report this to the anti-cheat committee. When doing so, please provide the reason why you think they are cheating or have cheated. The anti-cheat committee will investigate this case based on the knowledge available to them and decide whether said player is or isn’t cheating.

But don’t be worried, the anti-cheat committee will be careful that non-cheating members will certainly not be banned.
